Mentor
Huebner ... a medal winning track star in high school, whose record
was not broken for seventeen years, also boxed and worked as an
artist on the school paper, and due to his sport and academic
achievements, won multiple scholarships to a variety of prestigious
art institutes, and so was able to attend art classes without
charge, but with no money for food, and certainly none for supplies,
he was forced to salvage broken charcoal pencils from the class
room trash bins in order to draw on yesterday's newspapers, and
after only one year, without enough money for food and none for
art supplies, he eventually had to quit the art classes and went
to work as a house painter for a year, when one of the elite schools
(Chouinard Art Institute) hired him to instruct a "Life Drawing"
class, which he taught for over 25 years, continuing even after
he was contracted to work in the motion picture industry, as he
enjoyed teaching and felt a rapport for the students, his early
years as a struggling artist having been a traumatic experience
that left him vulnerable to the plight of other 'poor' artists,
and so after his death, to help young artists in need, who have
no money and who exhibit talent and desire, it seemed important
and appropriate that The Mentor Huebner Memorial Art Award Fund
be created in Mentor's honor.
