Mentor
Huebner was a Post Impressionist Painter, a prolific Artist, and
spent his entire life creating Art. It was the basic force of
his life. He painted for the love of it. He always felt like painting.
He was never motivated by any thought of Sales, and he would never
sell a painting to anyone he didn't like.
Some
collectors succeeded in purchasing his work and some didn't. making
money selling his art wasn't important to Mentor. He often said
he didn't need to make money selling his art because working in
the Motion Picture Industry as a Conceptual Designer, afforded
him the luxury of being independent. He'd say, "I'm my own
art benefactor."
Mentor's
feelings about a potential collector influenced him more than
any profit he might gain. A few rejected collectors sometimes
became a little upset. When it became clear that Mentor didn't
'feel' like selling a painting to someone, it became a little
embarrassing. If they were a professional collector or a personal
shopper made little difference to him. Throughout the years, it
wasn't unusual for Mentor to freely give away a painting valued
at several thousands ~ because he 'felt' like it.
Now
that Mentor is physically gone I'm left with an awesome task of
trying to 'know' how he would have felt about someone. So I will
have to take it personally as Mentor did.
As
a Plein Aire Painter, Mentor spent his lifetime painting Landscapes,
Seascapes, Cityscapes and Mountain ranges throughout Los Angeles,
up and down California, throughout most of the Continental United
States, and wherever a movie production company sent him on location.
Mentor
was a Master. If someone isn't trained in art, or lacks confidence
to make a value evaluation, still upon seeing Mentor's work, they
will immediately recognize it to be the work of a Master. There
is no question about that fact. It's very clear.
Mentor
had a Dual Career. Since he was a young guy he worked in Fine
Art and Film Production ~ simultaneously. He created a fantastic
body of art work in each. It's estimated he had to have accomplished
over 40,000 Drawings in his work on 250 Feature Films.
Over
the years despite the casualness of the Studio Production Companies,
lost shipments, beak-ins, burglaries, earthquakes, fire and floods
~ incredibly some of the 40,000 drawings survived. They are rare.
Some are available for sale as either reproductions in Limited
Editions or originals.
Mentor's
Motion Picture Production Drawings, not only display a technical
exactness, and an expertise necessary to insure a film's visual
success, but they are today considered by the Film Industry's
experts to be artistically sound and without equal. Much of his
work is used to teach film making at prestigious Art Institutes
and Film Making Schools. He is an undisputed ICON in his field.
His
film drawings have been exhibited as works of art in various important
art shows, galleries and museums throughout the nation and Internationally.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Washington,
DC Smithsonian Museum have each featured his conceptual drawings
and production paintings in Art Exhibits, Nationwide, that ran
for several years each tour.
Mentor's
paintings have been exhibited in 50 One Man Art Shows, multiple
group shows and many tough competitive Exhibitions. His work has
won multiple awards and can be found in personal art collections
World-Wide.
Each
one of his creations, his paintings and drawings, show a quality
that clearly indicates they are based on a foundation of traditional
classical training. Mentor's intelligent compositions, strong
designs, vibrant colors and exciting brushstrokes express the
dynamic style and emotion of an artist who worked with a united
mind and heart. It is no wonder that Mentor's peers call him,
"King of the Illustrators".
Mentor
put as much of his soul into his Conceptual Designs for Film Making
as he put into his Post Impressionist Paintings. Saying in explanation,
"It's how I do it. It's what I am. I can't work any other
way. I don't like doing lousy work. If it's for me or for the
Studios, or for all other commercial purposes ~ it's all the same.
I have to work a certain way."
It's
sort of funny now, but a long time ago, a well known producer,
seriously asked Mentor to cut down the quality of his work...maybe
not work 'As good" , so he could be paid at a lessor rate.
He told Mentor, "I don't care if it's not so good."
How
outrageous can anyone be? Mentor told him, that he had even a
better idea about how he could save money on his pay, "Don't
hire me." Of course they all did.
Because
of Mentor's overwhelmingly artistic gift, the prints and Giclées,
unique reproductions of his original paintings and drawings, do
not need to rely upon gimmicks, fake light, a prayer, or his DNA
samples to give them value.
Art
Lovers, Collectors, long term investors or novice beginners will
find his work dependable, satisfying and reassuring, besides being
easily accessible to every budget.
To
offer opportunity to Mentor's appreciative fans, who wish to collect
his Art, I've decided to make a few available for sale. Paintings
and Drawings will be for sold as either Prints or Giclees. I don't
intend to reproduce them in more than very Limited Edition, World-Wide.
Mentor's
Fine Art & Film Art, Paintings & Drawings, Giclées
& Prints, Originals & Limited Editions, come in a couple
of different sizes and inexpensive prices. Mentor's Art work from
his lifetime of productivity, offers everyone incredibly good
Art at irresistibly low prices.
Unfortunately
for all of us who loved Mentor, there will be no 'new' Mentor
Art work in our futures. What we have available is finite. This
is it.
For
an investor this could be an important consideration as it causes
the work to gain in value as the years pass and it becomes increasingly
rare. For art lovers, and fans, who had always looked forward
to his yearly output ~ it's a very sad fact.
Besides
the work displayed on this Site, if you have seen a painting at
an exhibit and don't remember where you saw it or even it's title
~ send me a slight description of the location or the scene and
I will try to locate it. Or you might ask if there is a painting
of a special location that you love. There is a possibility Mentor
painted it. If it exists I will happily attempt to make it available.
It's
an overwhelming responsibility. I don't intend to handle Mentor's
work as manufactured items in a factory. It's very personal for
me.
The
links below will take you to view additional art work that may
or may not be available for purchase. Feel free to make a personal
selection and contact me and I'll let you know if it could be
available. I might consider reproducing it. No additional charge.
To
know whether or not a Production Drawing, from a particular film,
listed in the Filmography, might also be available for purchase,
either as a Limited Edition or an Original ~ include the film's
title with your request for the necessary archival research.
There
is no obligation.

Due
to the varying sizes and shapes (horizontal or perpendicular)
of the original paintings, and due to the different base materials
utilized; artist paper, artist boards, masonite and canvas, having
been manufactured in either the US or Europe, it is impossible
to duplicate the recreations of the original paintings in the
exact measurements displayed anywhere on this Web Site or on the
order form. From time to time, there may be a variance of an inch
or two from any size promised, and if so -- this variance will
not constitute an error.
Any slight variances in size can easily be adjusted to fit any
frame by a framer.
All art work purchased from this Web Site is to be framed personally
by the purchaser.
Standard
Delivery requires approximately 12 working business days from
the date of purchase.

Many
admirer's of Mentor's work have asked if a Print or Giclee of
his Self Portrait would ever be for sale. They are enthusiastic
about the Self Portrait where Mentor is posed holding a painting
brush and wearing an artist's smock and cap.
He
was only 29 at the time. I love this portrait.
Some
of you may not realize that a Self Portrait is accomplished by
an Artist observing himself in a mirror. This method produces
a reversal of image. What we see as the Artist's left side is
his right and what we see as the Artist's right is really his
left.
Mentor
looked appealing .. either side.
Several
Museums Nationwide have had discussed with me their wish to obtain
this particular portrait to include in their Permanent Collection.
The
Curator at the Crocker Museum in San Francisco said this Self
Portrait of Mentor is dynamic and striking. " It has a certain
something. It's unique. "
I
have mixed feelings about giving up this portrait. For me the
original is priceless.
To
me, it is Mentor.
I
have thought about their requests for a long time. I'm not sure
yet what I will do.
So
now, for Mentor's many wonderful Fans, I've decided to offer it
as a Special Print.
